Indoor carpets returning the emotion of nature, designed by Anna and Paolo Bartoli for Warli.
The first collaboration of Bartoli Design and the Warli brand gives birth to Waters, hand-tufted indoor carpets designed to express the emotion and transparency of water flowing on the ground. A series of painted ‘canvases’ to recreate the delightful sight of natural elements as white sand, ochre earth and grass, crossed by streams of water. A sequence of emotions given by complex and soft shades, enlivened by the reflections of the threads.
Bartoli’s design philosophy, focused on natural materials regarded as ‘nourishment for the mind’, takes shape in the use of New Zealand wool and viscose and in the choice of the portrayed elements. Aesthetics and value are inspired by the desire to drive a connection with nature, generating visual and tactile well-being thanks to the pleasant contact with the fibres. Being surrounded by objects made of ‘authentic’ materials provides positive signals to our mind that will enjoy the experience.
As Anna and Paolo Bartoli explain ‘we all experienced the attraction and pleasure of coming into contact with objects made of natural materials; it’s a feeling growing from within’. Hence, the Studio has always been keen to design with that factor in mind: ‘we think that references to the natural world directly and positively impact the psycho-physical wellbeing of the users’.
The design of Waters started with a constant dialogue between designers and brand, from sketches up to the prototypes to test, develop and transform an idea into an enjoyable and effective collection. The refined balance of form and function defining Bartoli Design’s works, based on simplicity and clarity of style to get clean, timeless designs.
The Waters collection also highlights another important point for the Studio: craftsmanship enhancement. Indeed, these carpets are made with the ‘hand-tufting’ technique, in New Zealand wool and viscose: an artisan threads a needle through the canvas where the drawing is reproduced then cuts the thread. Next, the threads are fixed to the weave by a natural latex coating to which a heavy cotton fabric is attached, to secure fibers and protect the carpet from wear.
That manufacture, which creates long-lasting items, is obtained in a relatively short time compared to other techniques, such as knotting. Another advantage of hand-tufting is that it allows complex motifs, as in Waters where delicate hues are the result of a careful mix of images and colours.
